In my old age (not even 30 yet), I’m usually in bed on Friday nights by 10 pm, and last Friday was no different. I was lying in bed, reading through the news feed on facebook when something interesting caught my eye. What was it you ask, good question. It was a post by a fellow writer, inviting other writers to play a game called Friday Nyt Free Writes. What is that you ask, another great question! It’s a game where he’d write the beginning of a story as a status, and other people could join in and add more to it. There were five stories total, and you could choose from any of them, or all of them.
At first I was hesitant to play because he’s such an amazing writer, so I knew anyone who played also had to be pretty darn talented. After reading through a couple of posts, I decided to through caution to the wind and give it a try. I choose Guilt, Mourning, and We Shouldn’t. It was invigorating reading the work of so many talented individuals, and having to write something off the top of your head, while not messing up the flow of the story.
I’ve decided that any opportunity I get to hone my skills as a writer, I am going to go for it. Although I am not very experienced with word play, I like to think I held my own. Either way, it was the most fun I’ve had at home on a Friday night in quite some time. It only made my love and passion for writing grow that much more. And I look forward to doing it again.
