Has being friends with an ex, ever cause problems in your current relationship? Check out this excerpt from, A Life Less Interrupted, when Sharice’s current boyfriend, Kevin, and her ex, Jamar, finally tell each other what’s really on their minds.
When Kevin saw Jamar enter the chapel, he politely excused himself and made a beeline straight for him.
“Can I talk to you for a minute?” Kevin asked.
Jamar followed him outside and away from the two men who were chatting away about married life.
“So what can I do for you?”
“For one, you could tell me exactly what is going on with you and Sharice. I couldn’t get a straight answer out of her, so I thought I would come to the source.”
“Well, if you think that Sharice is hiding something from you, maybe you should ask her again,” he replied, smiling a little.
“Look, I know it was weird in the beginning, and I promised to respect your friendship with Sharice as long as you respected our relationship.” Kevin paused for a moment. “But last night I couldn’t help but get the feeling that something had taken place in my absence.”
“Perhaps you didn’t notice, but I had a beautiful date last night who should be arriving any minute now,” he said, raising his arm and looking at the watch on his wrist. “Now, unless you want to ask me something more specific, then I think we should cut this bonding experience short.”
“Well, when you put it that way, Sharice is with me, and you really need to back off.”
“Now we are getting somewhere,” Jamar said, laughing. “But are you sure I am the one you need to be having this talk with? According to her, Charles was the cause of all of your problems. And if I am not mistaken, you two were taking some time apart, which made her a free woman. So whatever did or didn’t take place between us in your absence, as you put it, is between her and me.”
“I am going to tell you one more time; she belongs to me.
Before he could respond, Jamar noticed Lisa walking toward them and decided now they really did need to wrap their conversation up. He began to walk away from Kevin and toward her, but not before saying one last thing.
“You had everyone around here thinking you were a better man than me because you didn’t act a fool when he came to the barbecue and then showed up announced at her graduation, but I knew better. I know what it’s like to love her and watch her with him and wonder if you will ever be as close to her as he is.”
Jamar laughed as though one of them had told a joke and patted Kevin on the back as Lisa got closer to them.
“Hey, you two, where is everyone?” Lisa asked as she walked up and stood beside Jamar.
“Everyone is inside, and Kevin was keeping me company while I waited out here for you.”
Kevin smiled as he greeted Lisa.
“Well, I’ll let you two finish talking, and I’ll wait for you inside,” she said, patting Jamar on his chest and returning Kevin’s smile.
“I’ll be there in a minute,” he called after her. And as soon as the doors closed behind her, his smile disappeared.
“I have been you, and up until last night, I still wanted to be you. But now I just pity you. You’ve already allowed him to get in the way once before, and trust me, he will do it again. And if you think trying to make her realize how much she loves you by telling her you need space is the solution, she’ll get rid of you just like she did me. And where will that leave you?”
