Ready or not, I’m going to find you

One thing that I’ve learned as a writer is that you never know when inspiration is going to hit you. I love the spontaneity of my imagination! I could be lying in bed drifting off to sleep when my characters start calling out to me about this or that. Or I could be sitting in a restaurant having dinner and create a story about the couple sitting at the table next to me. The thing about being a writer is that inspiration often finds you when  you least expect it, much like love. But today, I actually went looking for inspiration and boy did I find it!

I started digging through old scripts I printed out years ago when I first got the bright idea to pursue screenwriting and I stumbled upon a script that I’d written based off of my short story, Brotherly Love, which is about twin brothers and how one tries to escape the clutches of his psychotic twin who is hell bent on destroying his brother’s new life. I was stoked and surprised to find it because I didn’t even remember writing it! Plus,my characters have been begging for the past few weeks to add more to their complicated tale. Now, I’m all too excited and happy to oblige them, especially since I know half of the work is already done.

So, to all my fellow writers and dream chasers out there, my advice to you today is to stop waiting until you’re ready to do that thing you’ve been putting off that will move you closer to realizing your dreams. I’d been telling my characters for weeks that I’d get around to turning their short story into a script, not even knowing I’d already started. Even if you just work on something for a few minutes a day, which is what I now plan on doing, it will be worth it in the end. Because even if you don’t think you’re ready, inspiration and motivation will find you. And it will be up to you to answer their call and to make your dream into a reality.
